Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is a chronic intestinal disease that preventing children in low-income countries from growing and developing as they should. With support from the Gates Foundation, we will map mucin defects in EED and explore new ways to combat it.
Environmental Enteric Dysfunction (EED) is a long-term condition that damages the protective mucin defense systems of the small intestine and disrupts nutrient absorption. EED can stunt growth and hinder cognitive development in children. The disease can also affect women during pregnancy, with potential negative consequences for both mother and child.
Together with Prof. Malin E.V. Johansson, we have been awarded more than SEK 12 million (approximately USD 1.2 million) from the Gates Foundation to define mucin-specific defects in individuals with EED and to explore new therapeutics interventions.
